Lampedusa forms the opening part of Paradise Regained. The island appears as the promised land that a refugee longs to reach, even when the journey may cost their life. The route is difficult and the risks are immense; those who find the courage to continue reach paradise in radically different ways—some alive, others only in death. The work confronts hope and loss without separating them, presenting paradise simultaneously as a destination, a promise and a final resting place.
