The Quintet for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and piano belongs to a group of works in which the bassoon has an important role. Its short movements can stand independently but also form a larger whole. As my research progressed, singing became increasingly important to my compositional process: the need of wind players to breathe found its way into the music, and many of the Quintet’s melodies were first discovered through singing rather than at the piano.
