Serenade

Commissioned by Martien Caelen for the So Sax! saxophone ensemble, Serenade unfolds as a journey through a succession of scenes: a musical narrative with a strong connection to nature. The saxophones are treated as singing voices, with simple, vocal melodies flowing between the different registers of the choir. Although the title evokes the tradition of evening music and the serenade’s customary sequence of movements, the contrasting sections are integrated into a single organic form. Each grows from what came before, carrying the listener through one continuous musical adventure. The premiere took place on 2 February 2024 at Brussels Town Hall during the Dag van het DKO concert.
